I am Squadron Leader Stephen Hughes the Commanding Officer of 645 Volunteer Gliding Squadron, based at RAF Topcliffe, North Yorkshire. We are all volunteers who provide basic flying training in the Grob 109b ‘Vigilant’ Motorglider, to young people in the Air Training Corps and Combined Cadet Force.

We predominantly serve the cadets of Central & East Yorkshire Wing and Durham & Northumberland Wing but also take cadets from all over the country on our annual courses. The courses we offer vary from Famil Courses and Aviation Training Packages to Gliding Scholarships and also Advanced Glider Training. The ultimate aim for any cadet is to fly solo which is an opportunity we offer to most aged sixteen or older. Occasionally there is opportunity to progress onto become a Qualified Gliding Instructor for those showing particular aptitude or dedication.

We operate a fleet of 3 aircraft. Currently we are the only Vigilant operator in the organisation and coupled with the fact we have a wealth of knowledgeable instructors, we’re able to offer a first class service to our customers – The Cadets.
